Mystery of Origin Solved: Shame-Shame Finger Gesture Jan. 17th, 2012 @ 04:36 pm

Stephy was confused about the "shame on you" finger gesture (a.k.a. "the forefinger rub") that I occasionally do to her when she's a naughty baby.

She thought it looked like grating cheese ~ and I've always thought of it as whittling a stick.

Finally, I felt compelled to google it, and came up with this...Collapse )

Comeback from the pits of .....well, what a fright. :) Jan. 15th, 2012 @ 11:25 pm
Well, with some valuable assistance, we've got this machine running now ~ after a fashion, that is. What borked this thing was a nasty virus, from whence I have no clue.

Luckily the hardware itself didn't burn up like I thought it did. It's amazing, considering the age of this computer. Not complaining!
I highly recommend the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program, especially the Malwarebytes Chameleon process. Without it we would have been obliged to reinstall everything and lose all my data. So until compy decides to finally give up the ghost, we'll keep on keepin' on widdit (BTW, the same goes for the car I drive ~ maybe once a week for less than 5 miles each time ~ the zombie 94 purple Saturn).

However, alas, LiveJournal continues to crash the browser tabs every time I click anything, so I've gotta be careful to keep copying all my LJ text onto a separate text file before clicking Preview or Post or even uploading a pic. It's gotta be something with this machine, because everyone else doesn't seem to have the problem. Ah well.

this made me smile awhileCollapse )

What a day. *Whew*

It's always something, right. Jan. 14th, 2012 @ 10:15 pm
Just making a quick post from someone else's computer to say that our computer isn't working anymore. I'm really surprised it lasted THIS long, being that it's over 10 years old.

Will get back to y'all when I find a solution to this little problem. Perhaps my niece's husband can figure it out ~ he's a computer network manager for a hospital.

As for right now, the snow is too crappy out there for me to drive anywhere.

Guess what. Things COULD be much worse.

Okay, time to go beat my daughter. La-dee-da. :)

Try, try again..... Jan. 12th, 2012 @ 09:50 pm
Once again, I'm attempting to post something here and see if it takes.

Seems every time I try to do anything on LJ lately, I get an error screen and cannot access it again. So that's the main reason I've been spending most of my time on Facebook and Twitter.

Today I was able to make one comment on one friend's post, but when I tried to comment on another post, LJ crashed my computer again and I couldn't get back in.

It's snowing here right now, there's at least 5 inches forecast, and by this time tomorrow we should be pretty well snowbound. Sure am glad we got our errands done earlier this week. It's not as if we venture much outside this apartment anyway. Fingers crossed the electricity doesn't crap out on us.

So ~~~
Let's make everything all better with some obscure surprises from an old photographer's newly-discovered batch of vintage pics:

Brian Epstein on Desert Island Discs, Nov 1964 Jan. 5th, 2012 @ 03:32 am
[[ I'm posting this now because I just found a treasure I've been searching for, for years ~ ever since I first read that Brian was on this show and what his absolutely favorite piece of music was (in 1964, anyway) ]]

Brian Epstein appears on the BBC's Desert Island Discs
12.00pm, Monday 30 November 1964 (47 years ago)

Brian Epstein's appearance on the long-running BBC radio series Desert Island Discs was first broadcast on this day.

The Beatles' manager was interviewed by the show's creator, Roy Plomley, and chose the eight records, luxury item and book he would take if stranded as a castaway on a desert island.

Brian's choices were...Collapse )

A surprising eBay find Dec. 23rd, 2011 @ 08:44 pm
Of course I couldn't buy it, but this screencap is pretty good enough!

First day cover, Beatles meet Brian Epstein
Dec 3, 1961 also 1st day of Hanukkah.
Sold on eBay by Coverscape in Cape Cod, MA

~ Coverscape Computer-Generated Event Cover, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Beatles meeting Brian Epstein, on December 3, 1961 (which happened to be the 1st day of Hanukkah)

This First Day Cover was postal-cancelled at Sagamore Beach, MA on December 3, 2011 (only 12 were made).

And, I am gratified that the seller chose to focus on Brian rather than the usual all-Beatle, Beatle, Beatle, Beatle, Beatle, Beatle, etc.

(just thought it was interesting)

Goodbye forever to an old Brian landmark Dec. 21st, 2011 @ 12:11 am

For months, probably.

» FEC vs Citizens United: A ridiculous decision that should never have been instituted.

@SenatorSanders (Bernie Sanders) tweets:

"I'm Ben, I'm a person.
I'm Jerry, I'm a person.
Ben & Jerry's ice cream?
Not a person."

Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court decision in a case called Citizens United vs. FEC.

The Saving American Democracy Amendment states that:
  • Corporations are not persons with constitutional rights equal to real people.

  • Corporations are subject to regulation by the people.

  • Corporations may not make campaign contributions or expenditures.

  • Congress and states have the power to regulate campaign finances.

Me, I rarely sign online petitions. Top of my head, I've signed the RRHoF petition and this one. There may be one or two others, but I don't remember them offhand.

However! This one is very, very important ~ and Bernie Sanders is very, very trustworthy.
