Derek Taylor on Brian Epstein
The Death of Brian Epstein
There are also a couple of John Lennon vids ~ basically part 1 and part 2 of the 1970 Jann Wenner audios. Links are at the bottom of this post.
As we know, the Lennon memory was the most unstable of the boys, yet the mouth was the most mobile ~ so John is very blunt in his faulty assessment of Eppy.
Actual history proves that, when compared with other managers, Brian was much more generous and fair with his Boys, yet John's recollections are obviously marred by the many talks he'd had with Allen Klein the fact-twister, in cahoots with Yoko.
However, even as John is describing Brian Epstein as "robbing them" you can hear some affection leaking through in his voice: "What I hate is, the way they're all attacking Allen... and Brian was a nice guy, but he knew what he was doing, he robbed us, you know, he fucking took all the money, and looked after himself and his family, you know, and all that... and it's just a myth, I hate the way Allen is attacked and Brian is made out to be an angel, just 'cos he's dead. He wasn't, you know, he was just a guy."
Contrast that with the different attitude John exhibited a few years later, after Klein had royally ripped THEM off.
Allen Klein never had love or devotion for the Boys, he only lusted after the power and money they could bring him. Klein would never have gone through 11 months of rejection after rejection to secure them a record deal, and then propel them to the toppermost of the poppermost.
By his own admission, he rejoiced when Brian died. He heard the news on the car radio, shouted "I've got 'em!" then took the first plane to London and proceeded to scavenge.
I've always felt John owed a great debt to Eppy's legacy for acting as the Allen Klein bad-mouthing puppet, but Lennon was never one to easily apologize...even after Klein had proved to be more uncaring and greedy than Brian could ever be.
