Shabbat Shmooze ~ Finally! Germany opens their huge Nazi crimes archive to public
|
May. 10th, 2008 @ 12:09 pm
|
|---|
The International Tracing Service (ITS) in the western town of Bad Arolsen contains about 50 million records on some 17 million victims of Hitler's Nazi regime. ...
... It even contains the names of people on "Schindler's List" -- hundreds of Jews saved by businessman Oskar Schindler -- which was the subject of a Steven Spielberg film.
Quote ~ "If these records had been opened earlier, they might have found each other. I could have found those documents 20 years ago, when she was still alive."
Story by MELISSA EDDY Friday, May 9, 2008 7:45 AM MDT
( Read the entire article behind this cut )
More quotes: - Her parents survived the war, but her late father never talked about what happened to him or why he had a long scar down his neck.
But her unusual family name came up on an index card from a displaced persons camp in Italy. It contained detailed information about her father. "It listed every place he had been," she said - from Russia, to Tashkent, to surviving a shot to his neck by the Nazis by falling into a cellar and being left for dead.
- Tom Weiss of Newton, Mass. found his uncle's name on a yellowing Gestapo list of Jews arrested in France.
"When you see his name on these original lists it has an emotional impact," he said. "It sent chills down my back."
- "The Nazis took away our names and gave us numbers. Our role is to take away the numbers and give back the names," Gary Mokotoff, a genealogist who helped organize the group from Israel, the U.S., Britain and Australia, said Thursday. "There is a wealth of information here."

One big reason why this touches yon eppylover, when usually it seems she's pretty discompassionate about the human condition in general (shades of Carlin and Napier-Bell) ~ is a small repartée that occurred awhile back with layla1188 ~ Brian was a little Jewish kid during the Holocaust

EPPYLOVER SAYS: Allan Sherman is much, MUCH more than just "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah (Camp Grenada)"...! I myself am proud to have owned, since forever, and on glorious original vinyl, the LP's My Son The Folk Singer, My Son The Celebrity, and My Son The Nut
The Parody’s Over: Whither Our Era’s Mickey Katz or Allan Sherman? Essay
By David Kaufmann Tue. Jan 08, 2008

In the 11 months since it was released on YouTube, Leah Kauffman’s parody of Justin Timberlake, “My Box in a Box,” has been viewed more than 4 million times. Her “I’ve Got a Crush…on Obama” — out since June 2007 — has been hit close to 5 million times.
Like Kauffman, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, “Reno 911” and “The Simpsons,” bless them, have done what they can to restore parody to its once prominent position in American comedy.
Nevertheless, their welcome success cannot hide the fact that at the movies, on television and on the radio, parody is just not as big as it was. While there is a lot of funny stuff going around these days, there just isn’t as much good, old-fashioned parody.
Especially Jewish parody. ( I’m sensitive to this because... )the sanctioned tumult, the wild rumpus of anarchism, which, as Gershom Scholem claimed, lies at the very heart of Judaism.

Shabbat Shmooze ~ Sean Altman's fave Beatle ~ and other joys of Jewmongous

A Jew's favorite Beatles member can't be John, Paul, George or Ringo.
To Sean Altman, the favorite has to be the most Jewish member of all - Brian Epstein, The Beatles' manager.
And here's the song! I dedicate this video to Frizz K West, who "gets" it!

| » Shabbat Shmooze ~ Beatles, Israel and... Eppy's mum? |
There are all these big headlines now about Israel apologizing to The Beatles for cancelling their appearance in 1965.
None of them seem to quite get at the entire truth.
However, last July (2007) I had made a post on just that subject ~ SEE ~ http://eppylover.livejournal.com/286880.html
As Walter Cronkite used to close out his newscast, "and THAT's the way it is!" ...errmmm, was.
( For a more amusing slant on the Beatles/Israel blather... )
p.s. Israel denies they apologized? Israel denies they apologized for Beatles snub More than 40 years after it barred the Beatles from playing there, Israel said it wants the surviving members to participate in a concert celebrating the country's 60th birthday. But the Israeli embassy in London denied a report that they had apologized for its original refusal to let the Beatles perform in the country. [more...] Source: Fox News, via WhatGoesOn.com

| » Shabbat Shmooze ~ |
Before she once again forgets, your busy eppylover posts a bit of text that she found somewhere sometime.
This bit must have touched her in a special way ~ and, I'll admit, it still does.
It simply isn't one Jewish inventor or one isolated Jewish moment of brilliance. Jewish wisdom and talent is far exceeding. Choose any field, and you will find that Jews have excelled in it.
If you look at Jewish success as a whole, it's amazing. Once you factor in their 1/4 of 1% standing in the world's populace, every Jewish success then becomes tenfold; e.g., of the 660 Nobel prizes from 1901-1990, 160 have been won by Jews. That number translates into winning 40 x more than should be expected of them, simply based on their low population numbers. In the end, Jews win more Nobel prizes than any other ethnicity.
From Jesus to Moses, Christianity to The Sabbath, Einstein to Freud, Hollywood to Spielberg, polio vaccine to the syphilis cure, Jews have been graced with the gift of talent: talent in every field of human endeavor.
My heroes :D

| » Hi for a minute ~ Sunday Sermon, Shabbat Shmooze, & Update |
I'm putting up a short post using Stephy's laptop (which she's already pushing me off of, blast it all) to tell y'all I'm still alive. As if.
In exchange for her kindness, she requires that I publish her latest fave Jeebus pic. If you don't know the Katamari game, you won't get it.
( Not for the easily offended ) I'm still working at setting up the new 'puter. Every time I turn around it seems I have forgotten to transfer something over, and must access the external hard drive again. This holiday season is also a bit more tumultuous than usual, so I'm existing mainly in the brick&mortar world lately. Until everything's all set on the 'puter, I shall not connecticate it to the innertubes.
Also, since I have missed the shmooze yesterday, here's a link that I've had sitting around ~ Beatley and Briany people might find it interesting, in a Jewishy sorta way. Or not. Volunteers drive eclectic learning at LimmudLA The Jewish Journal of greater L.A - Los Angeles,CA,USA ... Angeleno Judy Aronson attended a session on the Jews and the Beatles, where she sat next to the former neighbor of Beatle's manager Brian Epstein. ...
Um. Yikes. Stephy has now set her phaser on "kill" and the mom must beam out.
Have a nice New Years Eve if I'm not back!

| » Shabbat Shmooze ~ Rabbi Waxman Went To Hell, Doo-Dah, Doo-Dah... |

Not because I'm overly paranoid, but to avoid any potential unpleasantness ~ well, slap me and call me a little bit paranoid, then ~ in any case, I do not wish for Jack Chick's webmaster to trace me back as a hostile linked site.
So please copy & paste the following url into your browser's address space to read the comic "Chick Tract" ~ Where's Rabbi Waxman? ~ it's way beyond ridiculous wuddafookery, but those coulterfundie Xians really do get off on it:
http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0014/0014_01.asp
NOW, have patience and read the following excerpt from an outstanding sermon by Rabbi Steven Fuchs ~ it serves as a brilliant answer to Chick's creepy blatherings:
...And so, my hope: Let us live side by side in mutual respect and peace. Mutual respect precludes belittling the integrity of our religion as it is. If Jesus brings fulfillment and satisfaction and meaning in life to Christians, I say it again, I am happy for them. But Jesus plays no role, no role whatsoever in the religious thinking of the Jew.
( You see, there are three major claims which Christians make for Jesus ) Rabbi Fuchs SO wins this one.

Hopefully, nobody missed my lack of a Shmooze this shabbos (since it is after sundown now, alas), but still I feel the need to provide something.
Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Lennon Done Jewish/Reggae with a touch of Hip Hop I usually disparage almost all covers of Beatles and afterBeatles songs; however, I was able to listen to this one, at least once ~ and even enjoyed it a bit.

Just enough Jamaican influence was injected to offset the "Oh look, I'm singing a Beatle song, aren't I wonderful!" feeling I always get from Fabs cover songs and tribute bands.

"Incidentally, anyone who doesn't understand why a Jewish comedian would write a mock homosexual love song to someone who denies both the existence of the Holocaust AND the presence of gays in his country is terribly and depressingly dense."

The Epstein family attorney speaks out Liverpool Echo, Oct 12, 2007
An article by Rex Makin ~ AND THE EPPYLOVER'S COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT ~ Some 40-odd years ago my next-door-neighbour Brian Epstein called in to see me with regard to the ascent of the Beatles. ( He told me... )
For those who would wish to participate in last week's Google assault on the results for the search term "Jew" ~ but don't quite know how to create the links ~ I shall try to make it easier, below. ( instructions behind this cut ) Then paste it into a new post window and enter it. It should end up looking like this:
jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew, jew
In my next incarnation, I believe I shall add both Mel Brooks, jew and Yakov Smirnoff, jew.
Just remember three things so Google can catch it: 1. Make sure it's not behind an LJ-cut, 2. Make sure it's not in a friends-only post, and 3. It won't work if you have blocked search engines in your LJ preferences.
