Shabbat Shmooze ~ Finally! Germany opens their huge Nazi crimes archive to public

The International Tracing Service (ITS) in the western town of Bad Arolsen contains about 50 million records on some 17 million victims of Hitler's Nazi regime. ...

... It even contains the names of people on "Schindler's List" -- hundreds of Jews saved by businessman Oskar Schindler -- which was the subject of a Steven Spielberg film.

Quote ~ "If these records had been opened earlier, they might have found each other. I could have found those documents 20 years ago, when she was still alive."

Story by MELISSA EDDY
Friday, May 9, 2008 7:45 AM MDT

BAD AROLSEN, Germany - A mother and child separated. A father's war wound. An uncle's name on a list.

The unrelated and disparate items are among the discoveries made by 40 Jewish genealogists who spent the past week plumbing a trove of Nazi documents made public after 60 years.

For genealogists of Jewish families, the Holocaust is both a tragedy and a black hole, because so many of the 6 million Jewish victims disappeared without a trace. For years, researchers hoping to fill the gaps have longed to dive into the more than 50 million documents held in this German spa town and entrusted to the International Tracing Service, or ITS.

"The Nazis took away our names and gave us numbers. Our role is to take away the numbers and give back the names," Gary Mokotoff, a genealogist who helped organize the group from Israel, the U.S., Britain and Australia, said Thursday. "There is a wealth of information here."

For decades after World War II, the files were used only to help find missing persons or document atrocities to support compensation claims. But in November, the last of the 11 countries that govern the archive under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross cleared the way for public access.

Since then, interest has skyrocketed. Erich Oetiker, deputy director of the archive, said while the staff of 400 continue to process some 1,000 tracing requests per day, there are now also near daily visits from historians or individuals eager to trace a lost person's fate or view an original document.

American genealogist Sallyann Sack suspected for years that the collection held answers to questions about her family.

In the 1980s, she put in a request trying to trace the birth parents of her adopted cousin, who had survived Buchenwald as a 9-year-old boy, then been brought by her aunt and uncle to the United States. A form letter came back saying the search had turned up nothing.

But digging deeper during her time here, Sack was able to cross-reference the birth mother's second given name and access records of search requests made to the ITS since it opened in 1955 _ often detailed letters by individuals who reveal nuggets of family history while seeking a missing loved one.

"I found here that his mother, who was separated from him when he was less than five years old, also had survived," she said. "She came to the U.S. in the same year that he did, in 1949." The mother, if alive, would be 93 and Sack presumes she is dead. The cousin is in his 70s and still alive, but Sack asked not to identify him.

"They never found each other," Sack said of her cousin and his mother, her voice breaking. "If these records had been opened earlier, they might have found each other. I could have found those documents 20 years ago, when she was still alive."

Oetiker says the archive is in constant contact with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., as well as Israel's Yad Vashem _ both of which hold digitized copies of part of the collection _ along with the Polish Institute for National Remembrance.

The Washington museum has drawn up a list of more than 150 German words with English translations to help researchers read the documents: Arbeitslager (slave labor camp)... deportiert (deported)... mosaisch (Jewish)... auf der Flucht erschossen (shot while trying to escape).

Next month, a conference of historians is to meet here to map out the archive's unexplored contents and help determine how best to use the information.

Yet for some, who have struggled to piece together a seamless family picture, even the smallest discoveries can be moving. Tom Weiss of Newton, Mass., found his uncle's name on a yellowing Gestapo list of Jews arrested in France.

"When you see his name on these original lists it has an emotional impact," he said. "It sent chills down my back."

Opening to the public has brought about several key changes _ digitization, bright new research rooms, ITS staff eager to share their intimate knowledge of the documents with those seeking and often making a human connection through a find.

Esther Mandelayl, an American who immigrated to Israel two years ago, came to research the fate of Jews from Lublin, Poland. Instead she made an unexpected personal discovery.

Her parents survived the war, but her late father never talked about what happened to him or why he had a long scar down his neck.

But her unusual family name came up on an index card from a displaced persons camp in Italy. It contained detailed information about her father. "It listed every place he had been," she said _ from Russia, to Tashkent, to surviving a shot to his neck by the Nazis by falling into a cellar and being left for dead.

She said she could barely believe it: "I have every answer to all my questions about my father's story _ the scar, everything."

Associated Press investigative researcher Randy Herschaft contributed to this report from New York.

On the Net:

International Tracing Service: http://www.its-arolsen.org

U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum: http://www.ushmm.org

Yad Vashem: http://www.yadvashem.org

Institute of National Remembrance:
http://www.ipn.gov.pl/wai/en/10/5

A list of terms used to interpret documents:
http://itsrequest.ushmm.org/its/Glossary.pdf

A service of the Associated Press(AP)

More quotes:

Her parents survived the war, but her late father never talked about what happened to him or why he had a long scar down his neck.

But her unusual family name came up on an index card from a displaced persons camp in Italy.
Beatles Anthology Director's Cut ~ exactly what's in it ~ ?!?!

Product Description

Story VS Performance - The 1993 Director’s Cut of Anthology focused primarily on the Beatles story, using performance footage only to enhance the story. The final version would remove much of the story and details to include as much TV and concert footage as possible. At the time this appeared to be the best approach, but in retrospect opinions may change after hearing the uncut interviews; this was after all their one chance to tell their story. Collectors have countless sources for the TV and concert footage, but only one option to hear their story as done for the Anthology series, until now that is!

Uncensored Version - comparisons between the two versions of Anthology clearly show heavy editing. An entire sequence regarding Yoko Ono and her effects on the band has been cut-down to almost nothing; only on the 1993 version will you hear unedited and sometimes unflattering comments. Many interviews did not even make it to the Anthology book. One example is George commenting on the positive experiences he had with drugs, including the famous dentists real name! The 1993 director’s cut also includes the original extended sequence on George’s songwriting later trimmed at George’s request. It becomes obvious by program 1 what you are seeing is what the director and production team assembled and presented to the band before they made numerous change requests.

Program Beginnings - Each program begins with an unused animated sequence in place of the Help! Introduction.

In My Life Opening Montage - Programs 1-4 use this song montage with the commercial version using it only to start program 1. The early montage contains different shots from the final version including Allen Klein.

Flashback Montage - An early idea was to begin each program (beginning with program 2) with a flashback montage covering important material seen in the previous program, this worked well for the first few programs, but unfortunately took too much time, Beginning with program 4, the flashbacks only went as far back as the previous program

While My Guitar Gently Weeps Montage - Ideas about the montage were changing by program 5, and no song montage was used for this program. For program 6, a different approach/song was used, and for the first time it was flash forward montage, using much footage not seen elsewhere in the program. Programs 7-8 drop the montage idea entirely

Quality Of Archival Footage - At this early stage, Apple had to use what footage it had available with quality varying from poor to ex. Some of early TV appearances and newsreels are obviously taken from VHS screening tapes, and many include time-code. Some scenes contain the text “Temporary Picture” All of the new interviews and Apple owned material, including footage taken directly from the original cut of “The Long And Winding Road” look great and contains no time code. It is quite interesting to see what Apple’s film archives looked like in 1993. In 1995 Anthology producer Chips Chipperfield hinted at what this early version might look like when asked why they could not just use the original 10-hour version for the home video release “We can but that’s off-line. Off-line is a rough cut. It’s cut from whatever archive sources we have so a lot of it is VHS.

Unused McCartney Interview - Programs 1&2 include an unused interview with Paul. This was the first interview shot and used before finally being replaced with a re-recorded Paul in black turtleneck With this first interview being re-shot, the stories vary from the final release

Partially Unused Harrison Interview - For most of Programs 1&2, the only Harrison interview used is the control room interview with George sporting a moustache. More than ½ of this interview was later removed and replaced with a re-recorded clean-shaven George. With much of this first interview going unused, the stories vary from the final version

Unused Neil Aspinall Interviews - For most of the first two programs, we see Neil’s first interview sessions wearing no hat, the stories heard vary from the commercial version.

Derek Taylor - Derek has a larger role in the early version of Anthology, and is featured in numerous unseen interviews

Program Endings - An early idea was to end each program with a sequence showing the progression the band was making. Examples would be an overhead view showing the move from Liverpool to London, or the move from London to the US.

Early/Abandoned Ideas - The 1993 Anthology uses many ideas later modified or dropped entirely. The recreations of fans rooms differ greatly; TV and tour montages were created then later dropped. An early idea was to show the move from Liverpool to Abbey Road studios, done by filming an entire trip-sequence taking you from Liverpool and ending at George Martin’s door in Abbey Road Studios. Other early ideas put Paul in the film “The Girl Can’t Help It” Various other unused segments appear throughout the entire eight programs

No Closing Credits - At this early stage, none of the eight programs contain closing credits

1993 Ending - At this early stage, the documentary ends with the “Let It Be” sessions and rooftop concert. Program 8 part 1 dates from December 1993. 1994 would alter the Documentary considerably, with the three remaining Beatles reforming to record new music and joint interviews. It was at this point; the 1993 version was heavily re-edited leaving only a hint of what it had originally looked like.

Directors Cut up on YouTube ~ hurry!

FLASH! Before it's deleted by the bigwigs, the entire BOOTLEG version of Anthology is up on YouTube ~

~ It's called The Beatles Anthology Director's Cut ~ occasionally you find it on the black market in the form of ten (that's right, 10) DVD's, and it keeps getting banned by eBay every time they find someone is trying to sell copies.

The difference between the regular Anthology and the Director's Cut?

Well! This bootleg has more than twice as much material that was changed and deleted, from what Apple & the Threetles-Plus-Yoko picked over and chose to sell to the public. This director's cut is a copy of the first version that was submitted for their approval, and believe you me, the for-sale version that you own is all butchered up!

All the links to the videos on YouTube have been posted on { THIS BOARD } of the forum for your convenience.

Watch 'em as soon as you can, because I'll bet they won't be up for long!!!

For further info and commentary about it ~
{ HERE } is a post I made about this bootleg set, back on February 15. Cheers!

Starting at 99 cents! ...So why not?

Wow. wow.
So often I get asked,
"How can I know more about Brian? What do I read?"
... this is it!

Someone on eBay is selling the other BEST book ever written about Brian Epstein!
The Man Who Made The Beatles
~ until Wednesday, May 14. Starting at 99 cents!

For Beatle fans, it's a "must have" ~ no doubt about that.

Starting at 99 cents?
Unheard of. At this price?
The heavy hardcover edition? And only $4 shipping?
I would SO buy this myself if I didn't have it already!

Dang. At the risk of sounding like an advert ~ if you are an Eppy lover, or even if you are just someone who has wondered what's the big deal about who some people refer to as merely the Beatles' manager... YOU have to have it.
If I had any money, I would buy this book (and the Geller book) for everybody.

From a review of Debbie Geller's book:
For me, the most touching moment in the book is the story of Epstein spending a Beatles concert at the back of a hall letting himself go, screaming along with the girls in the audience.

The stock footage of girls screaming and crying at Beatles shows has over the years become a bit of a joke, a way of saying, even for some people who participated, "Look at those crazy kids." But there has never been anything crazy about those kids. Epstein responded to the Beatles in a way that has little to do with his homosexuality and everything to do with the ineffable, surging joy the band communicated.

One has never had to be a straight teenage girl or a grown gay man to fall in love with the Beatles. I'm a straight man who has been in love with them since my father kept me up to watch their debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show." I knew in my gut why those girls were screaming, and when I see the climax of "A Hard Day's Night" I know in my gut why they were crying, because I'm usually crying with them. The Beatles provoked the feeling Lester Bangs once described watching Elvis: "an erection of the heart."

"In My Life" settles once and for all the question of who the fifth Beatle was. For the best years of their career it was Epstein, who carried the same torch as millions of other Beatles fans. Tomorrow, the fifth Beatle will be whoever hears their music, or sees their movies, and falls just as deeply in love.

Getting back to the Coleman book on eBay. Even if bidding goes up over $6, it's still cheaper than everywhere else.

It's the totally fascinating, lovely, comprehensive and complete biography of Brian, and a big part of it looks at the Beatles part of his life from the Eppy perspective (of course).

(Also, when the movie comes out, you will have a much deeper understanding of anything that might otherwise whiz over your head.)

This and the Debbie Geller book The Brian Epstein Story
~ Here are the latest cheapest prices on that one ~
these two books are totally equal but so very different, yet both so trustworthy.

Taking into consideration that shipping from
regular booksellers tends to be higher than $4,
let's compare with some prices from

Amazon ~ The Man Who Made The Beatles

Barnes & Noble ~ The Man Who Made The Beatles

Finders Cheapers ~ The Man Who Made The Beatles
(I like this site)

Alibris ~ The Man Who Made The Beatles

Abe Books ~ The Man Who Made The Beatles

Go ahead and look at the various prices.
Sunday Sermon: Ahh Nostalgia! The Holy Lice of Bygone Days

THE USUAL SUNDAY DISCLAIMER:
Once again, please do not click the link nor the LJ-cut if you don't want to get religiously ticked-off at me. Let me stew and ignore me if thou wilts (sic).

A recent comment to a flister rung a bell, so I did a search with my LJ Archive program, and sure enough, back in April 2006 I made { THIS POST } ~ which (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) is probably worth a re-perusal for me flisters.

Anyway, here is the recent comment that jogged my memory:

Stephy has kept a large louse immortalized in a drop of glue on a small piece of cardboard for the past, ohhh, ten or eleven years, as a memento and a reminder ~ and, I guess, a nature study(?). As I recall, she named him "Lousy."

I don't know HOW many times I had to go through treatments on her head and everything else, until I found out she was sneaking over to the perp's house to play ~ those kids had been kicked out of the elementary school and had failed several school nurse re-testings.

7- or 8-year-old Stephy would regularly go up one street to play with the good mama-approved neighbor kids. Little did I know she made a detour in good neighbor's backyard to shortcut it over to the bad neighbor kids' house.

Bad neighbor didn't do a damn thing about their kids' lice because ~ praying to God was supposed to take care of them. God didn't want poisons of any type on their kids.

These people had been brainwashing little Stephy into fibbing to me that she WAS going to the good neighbors' house (she wasn't lying, you see, because she DID spend a few minutes there first) ~ and they were christianizing her. Saving her soul, saving her from her evil agnostical mama. Being sat down and sunday-schooled on weekday afternoons!

You've heard the song: "Sunday Schooled on Weekday Afternoons" by Queen

Eventually, after I had suffered through several lice-entious encounters with Stephy's head, a conversation with the good neighbor wandered over to the bug issue. Good neighbor spilled the beans on Stephy, never knowing that I had not okay'd her visits to bad neighbor. Good neighbor had been kinda mad at ME for allowing lice to be repeatedly spread to HER kids, but didn't want to cause a problem by bringing it up.

*headdesk*

And thusly I fulfill my obligation for a sunday sermon.

Shabbat Shmooze ~ I Heart Allan Sherman

EPPYLOVER SAYS:
Allan Sherman is much, MUCH more than just "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah (Camp Grenada)"...!
I myself am proud to have owned, since forever, and on glorious original vinyl,
the LP's My Son The Folk Singer, My Son The Celebrity, and My Son The Nut

The Parody’s Over:
Whither Our Era’s Mickey Katz
or Allan Sherman?
Essay

By David Kaufmann
Tue. Jan 08, 2008

In the 11 months since it was released on YouTube, Leah Kauffman’s parody of Justin Timberlake, “My Box in a Box,” has been viewed more than 4 million times. Her “I’ve Got a Crush…on Obama” — out since June 2007 — has been hit close to 5 million times.

Like Kauffman, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, “Reno 911” and “The Simpsons,” bless them, have done what they can to restore parody to its once prominent position in American comedy.

Nevertheless, their welcome success cannot hide the fact that at the movies, on television and on the radio, parody is just not as big as it was. While there is a lot of funny stuff going around these days, there just isn’t as much good, old-fashioned parody.

Especially Jewish parody. I’m sensitive to this because, my house, on the other hand, is loud with Jewish parody, old Jewish parody. My older daughter (age 6) likes Allan Sherman; my younger (age 3) likes Mickey Katz. Although my girls don’t get most of the jokes, they do sense, with the unsettling insight of children, that something pretty interesting is going on.

I’ll admit that I didn’t discover Katz until late in the game. In 1983, I found a copy of “Borschtcapades” in a secondhand store on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. My folks would never have gone for anything so overtly Yiddish, but they did buy other things. I remember three records from the early 1960s: Vaughan Meader’s great parody of the Kennedys, “The First Family”; a Harry Belafonte collection, and Sherman’s “My Son, the Folksinger.” The calypso kick didn’t last very long, and “The First Family” got shelved quickly after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. But I must have listened to “My Son, the Folksinger” a lot, because 40 years on, I still know the lyrics by heart. And needless to say, I also grew up on Mad magazine.

My kids are therefore the children of a child of what seems — from this distance, at least — like the golden age of Jewish-American parody, a period whose arc begins somewhere around the Marx Brothers’ wonderful travesty of “Il Trovatore” in “A Night at the Opera,” and comes to an end in the early 1980s with “Airplane!” and “Naked Gun.” It is not limited to film, of course, but occurs in all genres and media — in cartoons, in music, in stand-up and on TV. Mostly irreverent, usually relevant (or topical, at least), classic Jewish-American parody milked that hyphen for all that it could: It played the Jewish off the American and, when it could, the American off the Jewish. Sometimes, the Jewish won.

If puns are the lowest form of wit (and they’re not), then parody is the lowest form of humor (and it isn’t). The distinction between wit and humor is a little rough, but at least it’s serviceable: Wit is about intelligence and language play; humor is about personality and identity, about self-delusion and foible. A witty joke involves an unexpected turn of phrase and invokes intelligence; a humorous one involves verbal pratfalls and lampoons shortsightedness. Some jokes, of course, are witty and humorous all at once.

Parody seems simple. You take an established genre or, better still, a well-known song or poem or plot, and you rewrite it. In the process, you make use of its most recognizable traits to make fun of it, usually by revealing its pretensions. Jewish-American parody is no different. In the type of parody that I grew up with, non-Jewish forms are stuffed full of Jewish content with complicated, amusing results.

Sherman took “Frère Jacques” and turned it into “Sarah Jackman,” a clipped and oddly endearing telephone conversation about the achievements and tsoris of a large Jewish family (“How’s your brother Bentley?/Feeling better ment’lly/He’s nice too/He’s nice too”). The tune remained the same, but the ambience certainly changed. Katz took Davy Crockett, the backwoods Cold War hero of Disney fantasy, and turned him into “Duvid Crockett, King of Delancey Street.” Again, same melody, different intent. Disney’s Davy is anything but a schlemiel: Katz’s is nothing but.

Katz’s usual shtick began with something that seemed quintessentially American, like the myth of the West or something that was too obviously faddish. He then loaded it up with Jewish food and exploded it with klezmer. Katz showed — in his language, in his musical style and in the narratives he transposed with a laugh — that Jews lie just outside full Americanization. They talk funny, they eat funny and they listen to funny music.

Sherman was up to something else: He celebrated Americanization. He did this implicitly in his biggest hit, “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh” and explicitly in numbers like “Harvey and Sheila.” The latter is an ode to Jewish upward mobility, and ends patriotically with “This could be/Only in the USA.” Here, Sherman reversed the usual procedure of Jewish-American parody by stealing the tune, not of an American hit, but of “Hava Nagila.” He thereby turned the theme song of Zionist youth groups into a paean to the American dream and into a pitch for the Diaspora. Even at his most Jewish, Sherman’s Yiddishkeit was limited to some Yiddishisms (“How’s by you?”), some cracks about food and frequent nods to lower-middle-class Jewish preoccupations. The Jews in Sherman’s songs are not all that different from other Americans, and it’s not surprising that Sherman was remarkably successful in non-Jewish markets: He was reassuring, and he showed assimilation at work.

In the end, classic Jewish-American parody — whether it’s Katz or Sherman, Mel Brooks or Woody Allen — is the flip side of assimilation. Both parody and assimilation come down to mimicry: Assimilation is mimicry that dares not speak its name. Parody is mimicry that not only admits what it is but also makes a virtue of doing it badly.

In its fractured reflections on what it takes to be mainstream culture, classic Jewish-American parody patrolled the boundaries of identity and tested the rights and the rites of entry. That’s why Mad had such appeal; it recast the particularly Jewish predicament of Americanization as the general plight of adolescence. Mad’s spoofs were the products of Jewish cartoonists who thought like prematurely cynical, wise-ass 12-year-olds. Though the magazine zeroed in on the oddities and inconsistencies of the adult world and not on the idiosyncrasies of the goyish one, Mad threw in the occasional Yiddish word just to make sure you got the point.

At its best, classic Jewish-American parody transformed its audience’s dilemmas into sheer manic energy. Unlike the spritz of the Jewish stand-up or even the harmless insults of a Henny Youngman and a Don Rickles, the touchstones of Jewish parody are not particularly aggressive. Their anger, such as it is, is usually masked by the tummler’s goofiness. Listening to Katz’s inspired insanity, you would not guess that at some level, “Duvid Crockett” betrays a marked ambivalence about assimilation. Nor would “Harvey and Sheila” immediately strike you as having anything to do with the odd but often-noted contradiction of mainstream American Zionism: the fact that we live here, not there. The conflicts and psychological costs of Americanization might have generated classic Jewish-American parody, but they got expressed more clearly elsewhere — in that great shande far di goyim, “Portnoy’s Complaint.”

It should come as no surprise, then, that classic Jewish-American parody really didn’t survive into the 1980s. The ragged edge of the assimilating process had largely disappeared by that point, and so this particular flavor of parody lost its mediating purpose. Interestingly enough, though, Sherman’s work has recently been re-released, and Katz has come back, too, particularly for those who are working to rediscover the Jewish difference that Americanization tried to neutralize. Perhaps, then, Kauffman’s parodies come at us from the other side of assimilation. Despite the gauzy scrim of nostalgia that still envelops it, the golden age of Jewish parody looks like it could offer a path back to the kind of secular Yiddishkeit whose loss forms the bass note of Sherman’s and Katz’s work.

For my daughters, however, none of this is a problem, at least not yet. They are hearing something different and much livelier in the silly voices and bumptious humor of their favorite singers. They are getting a hint of the sanctioned tumult, the wild rumpus of anarchism, which, as Gershom Scholem claimed, lies at the very heart of Judaism.

David Kaufmann teaches literature at George Mason University.

The Jewish Daily Forward
Copyright © 2007 Forward Association, inc.

Allan Sherman mini-bio and discography

Warning: Even destroying your computer won't delete all the emails you ever sent...

...there are just too many servers that your email has passed through, and has been archived into...

Gone, But Not Forever
By John Roach, special to MSN Tech & Gadgets
E-mail difficult (actually impossible) to delete, easy to recover, experts say

This may be an old article, but it is still as true as ever.
Maybe even more true than we want to know.

As Karl Rove may soon find out, truly deleting an e-mail is a difficult thing to do, according to computer forensics experts.

The White House and the Republican National Committee announced last month they may have lost millions of e-mails from an RNC-sponsored computer system.

Congressional leaders are keen to find and read the e-mails—especially those sent by Rove, President Bush’s chief political adviser—because they may contain information on the controversial firings of eight federal prosecutors. Some leaders believe the dismissals were politically motivated.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is confident the e-mails can be found.

"You can't erase e-mails, not today. They've gone through too many servers," he said last month from the Senate floor.

Leahy later added to reporters that "a teenage kid in my neighborhood can go get 'em for them."

Really? How hard is it to make an e-mail message disappear forever? How hard is it to find an e-mail you thought was long gone?

Marc Rogers, chairman of the cyber forensics program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., says that truly deleting e-mail is "very difficult" and that finding deleted e-mail is a "pretty trivial" process.

Hitting "Delete"
Every e-mail program has a delete button that, when hit, will make a message vanish from the inbox. This action cleans up clutter and generally helps people feel on top of their workload.

But does that mean the message is gone?

"To be quite honest, nothing happens to the actual data itself," Rogers says.

Hitting the delete button, he explains, is like taking an eraser to the table of contents but not the contents themselves.

"It basically gets delisted as an area that has any information, and your system can write back to it,” he says. “But until your system actually writes back to it, that data in that storage area is not affected at all."

Michele Lange is the director of legal technology for Kroll Ontrack, a Minnesota-based computer forensics company. She likens deleting an e-mail to removing a card catalog entry for a book.

"Only until the librarian actually goes out to the library shelf and takes the book off the shelf and puts a new one in its spot is the book truly gone," she says.

Most hard drives today are so large that they are like a library with rows and rows of unused shelves. Rogers explains that computers tend to fill up the unused space before they reclaim areas with deleted data.

"That data stays there for a long time," he says.

A Clean Slate
To truly delete an e-mail, computer users can run so-called wiping programs that overwrite the deleted e-mail with a series of nonsensical ones and zeros, according to Rogers.

But, he adds, research out of Carnegie Mellon University found that a lot of the available software fails to do what it claims.

Another approach, Lange says, is to fill up the hard drive with junk files in an attempt to overwrite every available bit.

"I've worked cases where we opened the hard drive and found 6 gigabytes of Whitney Houston songs and we couldn't get anything back because they were obviously trying to overload the drive," she says.

But since e-mail is used to communicate among users of different computers, it leaves a trail as it jumps across the Internet from server to server to the recipients' inboxes.

Thus, in order for a message to completely vanish, it would have to be wiped from the sender's computer, the mail servers in between, any backups of those servers and the recipients' machines.

"That's pretty difficult to do," Rogers says.

E-mail Recovery
Since truly deleting an e-mail is nearly impossible, recovery is usually a matter of some low-tech sleuthing, according to Rogers.

Simple software programs are designed to search areas of a hard drive where e-mail is commonly stored. If the area has not been overwritten with a new message or wiped, the missing file usually turns up.

"This is not rocket science," Rogers says.

Even if the storage file containing the e-mail is wiped, pieces of the message may be scattered elsewhere on the hard drive.

Computer forensics experts like Rogers can search these areas for keywords thought to be in the message.

"Quite often we'll get maybe not the entire message—you might lose a little bit of information off the front—but you'll get the body of what that message was," he says.

Given the difficulty of deleting an e-mail from sender through recipient and the relative ease of finding messages thought deleted, the spirit of Sen. Leahy's comments on finding the missing White House e-mails is "absolutely true," Lange says.

But, she adds, the high profile of the case requires a seasoned investigator, not a tech-savvy teenager from down the street, to recover the missing messages.

"This is sensitive information that could lead to litigation or investigation,” she says, “and so you want to make sure you are handling this almost like a crime scene."
John Roach frequently writes about technology, science and the environment for National Geographic News. He lives in Seattle.

http://tech.msn.com/news/article.aspx?cp-documentid=4848920

Sunday Sermon ~ What Religion is Superman (and other comic book characters)?

Shabbat Shmooze ~ Passover Kosher Shortages! Pesach Playlist! RECIPES!

Rabbi Elefant's phone has been ringing practically nonstop as Jews in and around Manhattan, where his organization is based, attempt to hunt down the precious commodity.

Some stores in the New York area have been rationing kosher-for-Passover margarine, letting customers buy only a single package. Others are using it as a marketing tool, selling only to those who agree to buy a certain amount of other items too.

In Dallas, Mona Allen, a mother of four boys, is still desperately looking for enough margarine for the cookie and cake recipes she has collected and perfected for years. Her mother in Cleveland scoured grocery shelves there before flying down for the holiday, but could find only three one-pound boxes. That wasn't nearly enough for all of Ms. Allen's cooking needs. And it was double last year's price.

"I bake a lot, because I want to sweeten the holiday that my kids complain about," says Ms. Allen. "No matter how many new things I try at meals, they say, 'Yuck, Passover food.'"

Margarine is crucial to kosher cooking because the dietary rules don't allow mixing meat and milk products, such as butter, at a meal. Margarine, made of vegetable oil, can be eaten with either meat or milk, and it can be kosher if rabbis oversee production to be sure no dairy products touch the machinery.

That's not good enough for Passover, though. Stricter kosher rules for the holiday forbid corn and legumes such as soy. So Passover margarine is made only from cottonseed oil or palm oil.

Alita's Passover Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:
½ cup plus 2 tablespoons passover cake meal
1 ½ cup plus 6 tablespoons potato starch
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup pareve kosher for Passover margarine
¾ cup granulated sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
12 ounces kosher for Passover parve chocolate chips

• Mix together the passover cake meal, potato starch and salt.

• In a second bowl, mix together the margarine, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla until creamy.

• Beat the eggs into the margarine mixture. Add egg and juice & beat well. Fold dry ingredients adding chips or nuts last. Shape dough into 2 logs on wax paper, wrap and refrigerate for 3 or more hours. (The dough will keep for several days.)

• Preheat oven to 350. Slice dough and back on ungreased cookie sheets for 15 minutes until golden. This makes about 2 dozen cookies and recipe doubles easily.

--Mona Allen, Dallas, Texas

But it's a once-a-year product, and a hassle to make. Machinery needs to be broken down and cleaned before the margarine is made, to prevent contamination with non-kosher food.

Further discouraging production is a shortage of cottonseed oil that has driven its price way up. Some U.S. farmers deserted cotton to plant corn last year when ethanol production sent corn's price higher, industry officials say.

R.A.B. Holdings Inc., which sells the Manischewitz line of kosher foods, learned in December that the private company that makes its best-selling Mother's brand had gotten out of the Passover-margarine business. The private company, Ventura Foods LLC, bowed out because the plant was consolidated with others and "the expense to become kosher certified wasn't perceived to be worth it," says John Kidde, an official there.

The seller of Manischewitz looked hard for a new supplier, but other kosher-food makers weren't eager to rush in with new supplies. The result is that this year only one U.S. factory is making Passover margarine, MidAtlantic Vegetable Shortening Co. of Kearny, N.J.

But MidAtlantic makes only tubs and one-pound blocks or bricks, not the easy-to-use stick margarine. The bricks can be crumbly, some cooks say, and the softer margarine used in tubs has a higher water content that throws off recipes.

In any case, MidAtlantic couldn't fill all of its original orders, much less make up for the absence of the Mother's brand, because MidAtlantic wasn't able to get all the cottonseed oil it wanted.

"Frankly, it is a lot of work and expense for a factory to produce kosher-for-Passover margarine for a short time," says Rabbi Elefant.

Passover is a lot of work for Jews, too. While many are less strict, those who observe all the requirements of Passover must clean their homes of all forbidden foodstuffs and use a different set of dishes and of pots and pans. With all the cleaning and cooking, who has time to go on a margarine-hunting expedition or experiment with new recipes?

Most observant Jewish families were unaware of the scarcity of kosher-for-Passover margarine until they needed some to start baking this week. Passover, which commemorates the Jewish people's escape from slavery in ancient Egypt, is celebrated during two nights of elaborately prepared dinners during which the Exodus story is retold. But the strict dietary laws are followed for a week.

Bland, unleavened matzo flour is a staple of the holiday, making Passover cooking something of a sport as practitioners try to get food to taste as much as possible like everyday fare. "There are so few really tasty things at Passover that when you find a great recipe and you can't find an ingredient, you despair," says Stephanie Prescott, a Dallas mother of three boys who will serve 25 people during the Passover service, or Seder, on Saturday.

Her family's all-time favorite dessert, a "decadent flourless chocolate torte," requires a whole stick of kosher-for-Passover margarine. Ms. Prescott thought she'd be able to score some from a local kosher caterer, but he could find only tub margarine, no bricks or sticks. Finally, she dug out a year-old stick from way in the back of her freezer.

Alita Millen, a Baltimore business owner, had spent years perfecting a recipe for kosher chocolate-chip cookies that taste almost like the Toll House original. She first tried using matzo cake meal, but the cookies came out too grainy and heavy. Then she cut back on the matzo and added potato starch, and her cookies got raves. But now she can't find the stick margarine she needs.

She tracked down the last two packages of block margarine at a kosher supermarket, but was sorely disappointed with the results. "The margarine just crumbled. It was a mess," she says.

This is actually the second kosher crisis this Passover season, following the absence of holiday favorite Tam Tam matzo crackers because of production problems at the Manischewitz plant. It is the first time in more than 60 years that store shelves will lack the popular six-sided cracker that is as ubiquitous at Passover as Peeps marshmallow candies are at Easter and candy canes at Christmas.

Some Jewish cooks are facing the scarcity philosophically Charlotte Price in Cleveland panicked when she couldn't get the margarine for her traditional squash casserole, glazed chicken and cinnamon chocolate cake. She finally found two one-pound blocks, but the experience left her thinking.

"Passover food evolved over the years to some kind of contest to see who can manufacture the most things resembling the other 51 weeks of the year," she says. But "I think the idea that you can eliminate any Passover sacrifices is a mixed blessing."

Rabbi Elefant takes a longer view. "It should be the worst thing that happens to the Jewish people," he says. "I'll gladly take peace in Israel and give up my margarine."

Write to Ann Zimmerman at ann.zimmerman@wsj.com

Here's the article on its original website

Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y

PART TWO ~ Pesach Playlist?

SHALOOooOOOMmmMMMM!!!
<lj-embed id="97" />

MATZA BALL RAP
<lj-embed id="98" />

MATZO MATZO MAN ~ BY THE CHOSEN PEOPLE
<lj-embed id="99" />

WHO LET THE JEWS OUT?
One of those amusing DanMeth.com ad vids
<lj-embed id="100" />
FROM CHRISTINE WITH MUCH

Brian Epstein favors? ~ Facebook, MySpace, and...The Tonight Show!

CLICK PICS FOR
A FEW CHUCKLES

I know. I'm sorry. I'm being a real pain in the tuchas today.

Three posts in a row this morning.
What a way to mess up your f'lists.

Anyway, did you know that there's a Brian Epstein Facebook?
Problem is, one must be a Facebook member to fully access and respond to any Facebook pages!!! You can click and see the Brian Epstein pic gallery, though.

Sooo.....
Here's a favor I must ask of you all...

I have GOT to become a Facebook member, to stay in line with what I'm doing Eppy-wise, mainly with the forum, but also to keep Brian visible everywhere.

I tried to sign up once, about a year ago, but couldn't get the hang of it.
Now Facebook has become the #1 social networking site, and I have been arsked to try again.

So ~~ anyone else out there who happens to belong to Facebook:
Do you have any tips? How should I go about it?
I notice that you are forced to be "your real self" or they ban you.

Well, that's not cool, because I have absolutely no interest in throwing my real name out there and finding people from my past, "socializing" or "networking" with people for any reason other than Brian Epstein-ish ones.

Although ~ I am forced at this point to confess that ~over the past 4 years~ this Eppy-oriented undertaking of mine has indeed opened me up to some new amazing friends, on levels other than just Brian/Beatles! Omigawd yeah! The usually antisocial christine is indeed surprised and pleased with that development! (Y'all know who you are...I think!)

Favor #2 ~ if you're on MySpace, we can add eachother, too.
I am a bit embarrassed to note that I've got some MySpace friends that I don't recognize from anywhere else because ~~ some of you go by different usernames *augghhh!* and I FORGET who you are!!! (I'm old, remember? Heh) So if you are already on my MySpace (name's eppylover, of course!), and you are also on LJ (or are peeking in here from elsewhere), please remind me which usernames are which people. The ones I already know are near the top of my "top friends" column, and the ones I can't remember are at the bottom of my "All Friends" page, beginning after "The BeatleBox"...Thank you!!!

Favor #3 ~ I've recently acquired a really rare audio, 11 minutes and 40 seconds of Brian Epstein on The Tonight Show August 22, 1966, being interviewed by Johnny Carson!
Thanks be to Paul K. at Six Plus Three!!!

<strike>The problem is, it's in .flac format. I can play it on WinAmp, but I need it as an mp3 for other reasons. I do not wish to install another program merely to convert one 77,266kb file.
Is there anybody out there who can convert it to mp3?</strike>

BTW, here's an interesting Tonight Show page.

Enough for now, okthxbye!
